What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathic medicines have been
used for over two hundred years in treating ailments serious and minor, acute
and chronic, physical and emotional. Homeopathic medicines, called remedies,
work by stimulating the body’s own healing power, encouraging the body to behave
in a more healthy way. They are safe, gentle, non-addictive and are
complementary to orthodox medicines.
Homeopathy is holistic, that is,
it treats the whole person not just the symptoms and can also play an important
part in preventing disease.
The concept has been known since
Hippocrates in 450BCE,
and has been further developed down the ages including full scientific
elucidation by Dr Samuel Hahnemann.
Why is a Christian priest
practising it?
For over thirty years I have been
attentively listening to people’s upsets. For an equally long time I have had
the benefit of homeopathic remedies for minor – and occasionally not so minor –
ailments. Eventually the light dawned on me that the prayerful concentration
needed for pastoral
counselling could also be
used in finding homeopathic remedies for others. I studied hard and qualified as
a homeopath in 2002. Remembering that Jesus cared for the physical well-being of
his followers as well as their souls, the prescribing of a remedy is, for me,
as sacramental an act as praying for someone or giving a blessing.
